LEONARD AND HIS GIULIETTA SPIDER VELOCE IN THE COLORADO GRAND

Behind the wheel of his 1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Veloce, Mark Leonard drove every mile of the 2018 Colorado Grand in September. Participating for the first time since 2006, it was his fifth time winding around the Rockies and through the beautiful Colorado countryside. It was the 30th anniversary of the event. One that has become a staple for many car enthusiasts with pre-1960 vehicles in their collection.

Tremendously popular, this non-competitive event attracts participants from around the world with a variety of marques represented, including Ferrari, Fiat, Jaguar, Maserati, Porsche and Shelby Cobra. Among those cruising the Colorado highways and enjoying all the Grand has to offer, there were several 1920s and 1930s vehicles represented with Alfa Romeo, Bentley, and MG among the most popular marques. Patrons who witnessed the group of nearly 150 participants cross the Vail finish line certainly got to enjoy a fantastic display.

Although one never knows who you will cross paths with during such an event, there are always plenty of familiar faces and new friends to make while rallying along. For Mark, one familiar face stood out – Noel Hefty. Mark helped Hefty locate a Colorado Grand eligible car in the 1956 Austin Healey 100M she piloted with her daughter Tara. In the route book, Noel shared that she wanted a car of her own after co-driving with her husband Terry for 28 years of the Grand. In fact, the picture published in the Grand’s route book was taken in front of Grand Prix Classics! Terry completed The Colorado Grand behind the wheel of his 1959 Aston Martin DB4GT.

There is great camaraderie among the participants whether they are friends or family, rookies or seasoned veterans. The common bond of a passion for cars is all it takes to get the conversation started. This event, and others like it, provide great memories for those who drive along and inspire a desire to return annually. For some, it will be behind the wheel of another eligible car or to continue the streak of their reliable motored companion for another thousand.
