History:

Owned by Douglas  Shierson of Marathon Oil for many years. Team Shierson and Marathon oil were involved in Motorsports as a team owner and a Sponsor in the early 1970’s with 2-liter Sports Prototypes that raced at Daytona and Sebring, and it the late 1970’s Formula Atlantic championship and in the 1980’s ventured into the CART Indy car series with drivers, Danny Sullivan, Al Unser Jr. and Arie Luyendyk. Luyendyk winning the 1990 Indy 500 for Team Shierson. By the 2000’s Marathon Oil was a sponsor of the Kyle Petty’s Number 45 Nascar Team. Shierson sold the March to James King in the early 1990’s.

Selling to James King one of the Founders of the HGP (Historic Grand Prix) series in the USA in the early 1990’s. James who raced in Pro Formula Atlantics against the likes of Villeneuve, Rosberg, and Rahal in the 1970’s and raced in the European  Formula 2 series. In the TGP, HGP and Masters Series James won numerous  races and was rarely off of the podium. James raced the March 761 in various European Historic Grand Prix races, even reuniting with Vittorio Brambilla at Monza, Italy for a guest drive.

 

Selling then to Steven Romak son of Bud Romak who raced a McLaren M8F in the early 1970’s. Steven raced the March competitively in the USA HGP series always a front runner and even with a few wins against newer F1 cars. Romak who also raced Williams FW08 and a Tyrrell 012 Formula One cars to wins in the Masters and HGP series.

Condition:

The March 761 was restored in 1992-1993 by Geoffrey Davie in Reading, UK for Doug Shierson. At that time The Cosworth DFV was rebuilt by Douglas Lawson formerly of Nicholson McLaren Engines UK. The restored car was shipped to Shierson in Michigan in 1993. Then selling to James King the car is maintained by Phil Reilly and Co  in Corte Madera.

Then during Steve Romaks ownership the engine was built by Forest Terran a protégé of Phil Reilly and race support was by the Auto Spa in Sonoma.  Always maintained by the best race shops in California. First Class upkeep and excellent records. Engine build and dyno sheets and track support records. Racing in period Beta Tools livery.
